I realized--well, a while ago, but with clarity to the fact that it could have meaning--tonight that I have a very strong distaste for Britishisms in Supernatural and House fic. Especially in House fic, and I can't decide if I blame the House writers and their need to have House be so, so mocking when England and it's inhabitants come up, or my deep sympathy for Hugh Laurie and his kick ass accent that must make him want to kill himself at least a dozen times each day. (Hell, half the House dialogue would make me want to off myself, and I don't even have an accent to try and hide.)

But either way, it grates on my nerves in odd ways. I like most of these things, usually. Lord knows I've picked up strange speech things on the internet, for any number of reasons, and I like them, but not in my House fic. I don't know why, but there are you.

And I realized tonight, much to my horror, that I am, in fact, probably guilty of exactly the same thing. Only in reverse.

I'm used to it, don't even see it. Mostly I only notice the ppl who really try but slip and end up writing soccer instead football and things like that. (And hey ... at least they didn't say baseball ...)

So, my answers make me look sort of freakish with the English, so I'm making it clear now that I've answered them on the basis that it crops up in dialogue, not the actual narration. I don't care when it's in the story much, especially where it's stuff that you just wouldn't know unless you had a lot of experience with the language, because there's a fairly large amount of arrogance in assuming that everyone who isn't British should suddenly be writing like they are, but in dialogue I find it hugely irritating. Dialogue is what makes the characters come alive for me in the story a lot of the time, and writing it is about staying in character and about putting a little time into thinking, 'would this person say that?'

And, er, yes, I say this in full awareness that I probably put the Britishisms in to American dialogue. *G* Nobody ever said I was fair.

I find the anachronisms in HP more irritating than the language slip-ups - NOBODY had home computers in the 1970s! No! Hermione wasn't listening to Evanescence in 1995! Etc. But I'm American. And old.

See, that's the thing I fear I do the most, too. Because, hi, it's all about me. So is that worse then? If they saw faucet instead of tap after getting the u's and s's in the right place?
